Yesterday I finished my 60-minute spinning class and Runtastic Results workout and, as usual, I was completely starving. I was really in the mood for something refreshing like a protein smoothie, but I wanted to actually eat something with a spoon. Thus the Post-Workout Protein Smoothie Bowl was born. Nah, I know I am not the first person to make this but I absolutely HAD to share this recipe with you. So delish.
Here’s the usual post-workout selfie…
…and this is what I was thinking about.
First of all I want to get into protein powder. You don’t HAVE to have a protein shake after every single workout. The absorption rate of protein powder to the muscle is much quicker than a piece of animal protein or eggs or something like that, but I am a firm believer in real, natural foods over protein powder any day. Protein powder is what it is – a supplement. So don’t get caught up in “OMG I need my protein shake asap or I will die and have no muscle!” Yes, you want to get protein as quick as you can post-workout (I try to stay within a 30-minute max!) but that doesn’t mean the protein HAS to come from a protein shake.
But Lunden…why is there protein powder in this post-workout protein smoothie bowl? Well, first of all I really like it and it’s quick and easy. But when my workout happens to end at a time when I wouldn’t normally eat a meal then I have a protein smoothie. On this particular day I finished my workout around 10:30 and I had plans to eat lunch around 1 or 1:30pm. So I was kind of in between meals. Had I finished my workout later in the day, I would have just eaten lunch. Ya feel me?
Post-Workout Protein Smoothie Bowl Ingredients:
– 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
– 1/2 medium, ripe banana
– 1 tsp Maca Powder
– 1 cup frozen mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries & blackberries were in mine)
– 1 tsp Chia oil
– 1 tsp cacao nibs
– 1 Tbsp goji berries
– water (add it bit by bit so you don’t overdo it and make the consistency too runny)
Put all ingredients (except cacao nibs & goji berries) in the blender & blend! 🙂 Pour protein smoothie into the bowl and top with cacao nibs and goji berries. You could also add cinnamon on top if you want to.
